Have you ever tried the Frappuccinos from Starbucks? We aren’t coffee drinkers but we love many of their other drinks and treats, with the creme Frappuccinos being one of our favorites since they are kid-friendly and caffeine-free. I’ll occasionally bring some home from the hospital after work, making them an extra special beloved treat for us. Although we love trying the different seasonal flavors that come out, our favorite has always been the Strawberry Creme version, which is why we decided to make our own at home.
You may have extra strawberry sauce, and if so, save it to top yogurt or ice cream, or to make more of this drink another day.
- For the strawberry sauce:
- 1 lb strawberries, hulled and roughly chopped
- 3 tablespoons granulated sugar
- ½ teaspoon almond extract
- ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- For the drink:
- 2 cups ice
- 2 cups whole milk (or preferred non-dairy milk)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 6 tablespoons powdered sugar
- Whipped cream, for topping (if desired)
- In a medium sauce pan over medium heat, add strawberries and sugar. Simmer for about 5 minutes, until strawberries are very soft. Let cool slightly, then blend with an immersion or stand blender. Set aside to cool completely.
- In a blender, add ice, milk, vanilla extract, and powdered sugar. Blend until smooth. In a large glass, layer about ¼ cup of blended milk, then top with 1-2 tablespoons of strawberry sauce (depending on desired amount of strawberry flavor). Continue to layer, then top with whipped cream, if desired. Using a straw, gently stir to swirl layers together a bit (or stir more if you prefer a more homogenous drink).
